Thunder & rain could not dampen the spirits at the annual Liederkranz Summer Picnic.

After the clouds passed everyone enjoyed the outdoor pastoral setting of Casa del Mar aka Karen & Wilf’s well-groomed country estate, the picnic site.

Playing for Liederkranz was perhaps a gig that was always meant to be for Jennifer Maxfield, who grew up on Long Island, New York, surrounded by music, German family, and boys.

Inspired by success at the music festival in Italy last fall  - In…Canto sul Garda 2017 – our choir has been looking for ways to continue to grow the quality of our sound and reach higher levels of refinement in our choral endeavours.

At 1:30, March 13.18, ten members of Liederkranz Männerchor, sitting in the viewers gallery at the Alberta Legislature Assembly, were acknowledged for their winning the Gold Award for best in their category at In….. Cant sul Garda Festival and Competition in Italy, October 2017.  The Honorable Richard Feehan, Minister of Indigenous  Affairs read a statement to the Assembly recounting the Choir’s success.  Thomas Bonifacio, the Ministers Constituency Manager for Edmonton-Rutherford, led a tour of MLA Richard Feehna’s office showing his collection of artifacts of indigenous peoples of Alberta. 

Spafford wrote It Is Well With My Soul performed by Liederkranz 2018

The hymn "It is Well with My Soul" becomes closest to heart for one undergoing grief. Written by a Presbyterian lawyer Horatio G. Spafford (1828-1888) and composed by Philip P. Bliss (1838-1876), this deeply touching gospel song has long been loved.

 Why the invitation was extended

Dr. Jonathan Griffith, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for DCINY states: “Männerchor Liederkranz received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers as well as the exceptional quality of their audition recording. 

It is quite an honor just to be invited to perform in New York. These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and deserving of the community’s recognition and support.” 

The winter sun shone through the stain glass windows, into the sanctuary of St. Boniface Catholic Church at 10:00am to greet the congregation, Liederkranz Männerchor and Fr. Neumann to celebrate the Epiphany.  This Sunday each year Liederkranz is invited to sing at the mass.  It is their final performance of the Christmas season.
