FINAL PRAIRIE SANGERFEST

Sangerfest is a biannual music festival of German choirs from the prairie provinces.  Each choir would host the Sangerfest in rotation.  Men’s, women’s and mixed choirs from Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge have participated over the years. It was a joyous opportunity for these choirs to meet and celebrate their German heritage in song.

GREAT NEWS

Alberta Gaming Commission approved the funding application for Liederkranz to attend a Choral Festival and Competition in Canto sul Garda at Gardasee in Italy. When arriving in Germany the choir will spend 5 days in Fuessen before going to the competition Canto sul Garda.

NIGHTINGALE GAL TURNS 50

Karen Mills and 100 friends celebrated her 50th birthday at the Unitarian Church on January 28.2017.  She was born in 1967 the year of Canada’s 100 anniversary.

Highlight of the evening was a program of song.  Groups performed honoring the birthday girl: Chorealis a choir that Karen formed, Männerchor Liederkranz and, also, friend & soloist Andrea accompanied by guitarist Kim MacKell.

About reaching her 50th year milestone Karen said, “It’s not hard, just keep breathing.”

Liederkranz Music Committee created a list of songs (repertoire) to prepare for this years events – all events except those in the Christmas season.  Committee members are:

Donalee Gorfer, Wilf Kopp, Ron Staatz, Erhard Shirmaier, Dieter Schumann, Alwin Sperling and Harry Klann.

ST.BONIFACE CELEBRATION

Fr. G. Newmann was the celebrant who spoke, with reference to the readings, how the “star of Christmas” is a shining light to focus on throughout the new year -2017.   A little pagent presenting “THREE WISE MEN”, three elementary students playingthe Three Wise Men: Balthasar, Casper & Melchoir.  Lisa Scholtz filled the church with spirited organ music adding an uplifting mood to the celebration.  And Liderkranz sang 3 songs during the mass along with a short program in the basement parish hall after mass.
